A Soldier's Story: Specialist Nicholas Joseph Cutinha

 


Specialist Nicholas Joseph Cutinha was born on January 13, 1945, in Fernandina Beach, Florida. He enlisted in the US Army in 1967 and deployed to Gia Dinh, Vietnam, for the Vietnam War

He earned a Congressional Medal of Honor on March 2, 1968, when his unit came under fire from a battalion-sized enemy force. Specialist Cutinha, with communications cut off and command either wounded or dead, moved to the front of the team, initiating a retreat and providing cover fire  He maintained fire during his unit's retreat, despite sustaining mortal wounds.
