A Marine's Story: Lance Corporal Scott Arthur Schroeder

  Lance Corporal Scott Arthur Schroeder was born on December 17, 1970.  He attended Wauwatosa High School, playing soccer on the school team and graduating in 1989.  He enlisted in the US Marine Corps shortly following his high school graduation. Lance Corporal Scott Arthur Schroeder was assigned to the 1st Light Reconnaissance Battalion and deployed to the Persian Gulf in the fall of 1990 in response to Desert Storm/Desert Shield and the Gulf War.   On January 29, 1991, Lance Corporal Scott Arthur Schroeder died during his service when a mortar struck his armored vehicle. A Soldier's Story: Corporal James Bethel Grisham

  Corporal James Bethel Gresham was born on August 23, 1893, in McLean County, Kentucky. When he was about seven, he relocated with his family to Evansville, Indiana. Corporal James Bethel Gresham attended the Centennial School through grammar school and then worked at a local furniture manufacturer. He enlisted in the US Army on April 23, 1914, was assigned to the 16th Infantry Division, and posted at Fort Bliss, Texas, to guard the US border before and during the crisis of the Mexican Expedition. Next, in June 1917, Corporal James Bethel Gresham deployed to Artois, France, with the first wave of US Troops deploying in response to World War I. On the morning of November 3. 1917, while guarding the post, Corporal James Bethel Gresham was fatally wounded during an enemy raid on the camp. He, Private Merle Hay, and Private Thomas Enright were the first US soldiers killed during WWI. A Soldier's Story: Captain Arlo Laverne Olson

  Captain Arlo Laverne Olson was born on April 20, 1918, in Greenville, Iowa. He moved to Toronto, South Dakota, with his family when he was 10. Captain Arlo Laverne Olson attended Toronto High School and earned his Eagle Scout. After his 1936 graduation, he enrolled in the University of South Dakota, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and the ROTC program. He graduated in the spring of 1940 and was immediately called to active duty with the US Army in response to the troop build-up for WWII. Captain Arlo Laverne Olson was assigned to the 15th Infantry Regiment and deployed to Italy.   On October 13, 1943, Captain Arlo Laverne Olson led his unit across the Volturno River, intending to take the summit of Monte San Nicola.  He and his men were under heavy fire. A Soldier's Story: Specialist Steven Paul Farnen

  Specialist Steven Paul Farnen was born in Marceline, Missouri, on November 15, 1968. He attended Salisbury High School, where he was a member of the Drama Club and the Future Farmers of America. He graduated in 1987 and enlisted in the US Army shortly after. He trained as a truck driver and served with the 24th Mechanical Infantry Division, fulfilling a three-year contract and remaining in the US Army Reserves.   Once back in Missouri, Specialist Steven Paul Farnen began training as a pilot to fly commercial airlines. However, he was recalled to active duty in response to Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield and the Gulf War and deployed to Saudi Arabia in February 1991. Specialist Steven Paul Farnen died during his service on February 25, 1991, after a missile attack destroyed his barracks.
