An Airman's Story: Captain Michael Leo Chinburg - Gulf War

 


US Air Force Captain Michael Leo Chinburg was born on January 23, 1964, in Iowa City, Iowa, but moved to Durham, Hampshire, for his early school years. He graduated from Oyster River High School in 1982, where he played soccer, hockey, and rowing. Captain Chinburg enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter. He attended the University of Colorado and graduated in 1986.

Captain Chinburg enlisted in the US Air Force in March 1987, earned his pilot wings and was assigned to the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, where he flew F-16s.

He deployed with his unit to Saudi Arabia in December 1990 in response to Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield and the Gulf War. 

Captain Chinburg would die during his service on January 8, 1991, following an aircraft crash during nighttime exercises.

He rests at the Durham Cemetery in Durham New Hampshire.
