An Airman's Story: Major Richard Warren Chase - Vietnam War/Gulf War

 


Major Richard Warren Chase was born in South Bend, Indiana, on February 18, 1947.  He graduated from Penn High School in Mishawaka, Indiana, and was part of the school's debate team and choir.  Major Richard Chase was a graduate of Purdue University.

He enlisted in the US Air Force on January 2, 1970, and served as a pilot until the end of the Vietnam War. He left active duty in December 1982. Major Richard Warren Chase remained in the US Air Force Reserves.

In 1990, he was recalled to active duty with the 433rd Airlift Wing in response to Operation Desert Storm and the Gulf War.  Major Chase was assigned to Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany and was responsible for transporting medical supplies, food, and equipment to the Persian Gulf.

He died on August 29, 1990, when the C-5A Transport crashed shortly after take-off from Ramstein.  

Major Richard Warren Chase rests at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
